Jewish Heritage-Croatia
Croatia"s sites of Jewish heritage range from archeological relics, to medieval ghetto areas, to synagogues, and to Jewish cementeries with designs that reflect both Sephardic and Ashkenazic traditions. The posted itineraries have been based on historical facts collected by the Jewish Community. Many monuments, former and present-day synagogues and numerous Jewish cemeteries give the evidence of the rich Jewish heritage in Croatia.

The Jewish great men have given important contribution to our society in various social, economic and cultural activities such as:

Music:  Juius Epstein, Antun Švarc, Žiga Hirschler, Pavle Markovac, Bruno Bjelinski, Ljerko Spiller, Bruno Prister...);
Architecture: Jewish architects have designed many houses in the town core centre
Sport in Zagreb: Jews have taken part in sport life in Zagreb through their  central sport association „Jewish Sport and Gymnastics Society“, founded at the beginning of 20th ct.,  and their sportsmen have reached  the outstanding results  (the example of 4 Jews – presiding the most popular football club „Građanski“)
Natural and mathematical sciences: among the most important representatives we should mention David Schwarz – the first airplane constructor, Josip Goldberg – professor of geophysics, Vilim Feller – who was later professor at Princeton…
Medicine: the Jewish medical practise has been present in this region since the 14th ct. Considerable contribution has been noticed since 1781, when the Jews had public as well as private medical practise. There were 339 working Jewish doctors in Croatia in the year 1900. The Jewish Community in Croatia counts today approximately 2500 members.
