Fiesta of Saint Blaise in Dubrovnik

St. BLAISE is the protector of Dubrovnik and celebrated as his intercessor.

According to the tradition, when the Venetians on their way to Levant anchored in Gruz in 971 wanting to make some food supplies, when their actual intent was to occupy the city – St. Blaise contacted intercessor Stojko while he was praying in the church of St. Stephan and commanded him to notify the Senate about the intention of the Venetians so they could prepare the defense. It is believed that thanks to that notification the Venetians intention was opposed and to show gratitude the people from Dubrovnik proclaimed St. Blaise the protector of the town.
